Banastre Tarleton

Prints after Richard Cosway

These two images are based on a miniature portrait of Tarleton painted by Richard Cosway.

This version is identified at the bottom as "London, Published Augst 1, 1782 by C. Townley..." A lithoprint with signature, this version must be of 19th century origin, to judge by its style, though its original printing information is unknown to me. It looks as though it should be part of the Frank Moore set, but does not appear in Diary of the American Revolution. The faint writing around the edge reads: "Delin. by H. B. Hall from a Picture by R. Cosway, R. A." Since this one differs fairly radically from the miniature, I'd like to toss in the speculation that it was drawn not from the portrait itself, but from the earlier engraving, and so shows two generations of drift from the original source.

Antiquarian Christopher Bryant believes he has located a Cosway miniature of Tarleton, though possibly not the one from which these engravings were taken. Check out the accompanying article.

[Thanks to Chris Bryant for providing me with a scan of the 1782 version of the litho.]
